The fascinating story of Rosengart
Founded in 1928 by Lucien Rosengart , this French brand embodies the ingenuity and adaptability of the French automotive industry. Rosengart, a former collaborator of André Citroën, had the philosophy of offering reliable and accessible automobiles to the greatest number of people. The brand first distinguished itself by assembling Austin Seven models under license, before developing its own creations.
The 1930s marked Rosengart's heyday with models like the LR4 and LR8, which captivated with their modernity and meticulous finish. The brand constantly innovated, offering avant-garde technical solutions like independent suspension and aerodynamic bodies. This prosperous period continued until the Second World War, which marked a decisive turning point for the company.
A brand at the heart of French social history
The history of Rosengart is inseparable from that of the democratization of the automobile in France. In the 1930s, owning a Rosengart represented a true social status for the emerging bourgeoisie. These vehicles perfectly embodied the spirit of the times: modernity, elegance, and relative affordability.
A significant event in Rosengart's history concerns the period of the Occupation. Lucien Rosengart, of Jewish origin, was forced to relinquish control of his company and take refuge in the unoccupied zone. Despite these difficulties, the brand continued to produce, particularly to meet the needs of the war effort. This resilience is a testament to the company's solidity and the commitment of its employees to their automotive creations.

Did You Know? Anecdotes and Curiosities about our Miniatures
Who was Lucien Rosengart and how did he revolutionize the French automotive industry?
Lucien Rosengart was a French engineer and industrialist who founded the eponymous brand in 1928. A pioneer in the democratization of the automobile, he created popular and affordable cars, including the famous LR2, nicknamed 'the car of the French people'. His visionary approach was to make the automobile accessible to the greatest number of people, long before the Volkswagen Beetle.
What is special about the Rosengart LR4 and why is it so sought after by collectors?
The Rosengart LR4, produced from 1932 to 1939, was powered by an 1100cc 4-cylinder engine and could reach 85 km/h, which was remarkable for its time. Its elegant bodywork and legendary reliability make it one of the most sought-after model cars today. It represents the golden age of the brand with over 40,000 units produced.
Why did Rosengart cars disappear after World War II?
The Rosengart factory in Neuilly-sur-Seine was requisitioned during the Occupation to produce German military equipment. After the war, the elderly and exhausted Lucien Rosengart was unable to restart production in the face of competition from the Citroën 2CV and Renault 4CV. The last Rosengart rolled off the production line in 1955, marking the end of a 27-year industrial adventure.
What is the surprising story behind the creation of the Rosengart Supertraction?
In 1938, Rosengart launched the Supertraction, directly inspired by the revolutionary Citroën Traction Avant. This 'copy' was actually legal because Rosengart had purchased the manufacturing rights from André Citroën. With its front-wheel drive and 1.9L engine, it was more powerful than the original Citroën, reaching 110 km/h. Only 500 examples were produced, making it an exceptional collector's item today.
How many different models did the Rosengart brand produce and which was the most popular?
Between 1928 and 1955, Rosengart produced around fifteen different models, from the small LR2 coupé to the luxurious LR539 convertible. The most popular model was undoubtedly the LR4 N2 'Torpedo', with 25,000 sold between 1934 and 1938. This 4-door family saloon perfectly embodied the Rosengart philosophy: elegance, robustness, and an affordable price for the French middle class.
