The extraordinary diversity of Tatra Models
My Tatra model car collection lets you discover the legendary technical ingenuity of this Czechoslovakian brand. You'll find the famous streamlined sedans of the 1930s with their revolutionary lines, such as the Tatra 77, which was one of the world's first truly aerodynamic production cars.
The range spans pre-war models to more recent creations, including the commercial vehicles that have made Tatra's reputation worldwide. Each Model demonstrates the unique approach of this brand, which never hesitated to innovate, sometimes to the detriment of the aesthetic conventions of its time.
In this collection, you'll also discover the famous Tatra trucks that still dominate the most prestigious rally-raids today, including the Dakar. These Model reproductions perfectly capture the robustness and technical originality of these track behemoths.
The unique history of Tatra
Founded in 1850 in Moravia as Schustala & Company, Tatra is one of the oldest continuously operating automobile manufacturers . The company initially made its mark building railway carriages before turning to automobiles in 1897 with the Präsident, one of the first automobiles in Central Europe.
Under the leadership of engineer Hans Ledwinka, Tatra developed a revolutionary technical philosophy based on the central tubular structure and air-cooled rear engines in the 1920s. This approach reached its peak with the 1934 Tatra 77, whose exceptional aerodynamic performance would profoundly influence the global automotive industry.
After World War II, under the communist regime, Tatra specialized in heavy and utility vehicles , developing a unique expertise in off-road trucks that still makes its international reputation today. The brand survived the political upheavals and continued to innovate, particularly in the field of fire engines and military trucks.
A legend born of technical audacity
Perhaps the most significant anecdote in Tatra's history concerns the brand's influence on Ferdinand Porsche himself. When developing the Volkswagen Beetle, Porsche drew extensively on Ledwinka's technical innovations, including the air-cooled rear engine and certain aspects of the suspension. This "inspiration" led to a high-profile lawsuit after the war, which Tatra won, securing substantial royalties from Volkswagen.
Even more extraordinary, the Tatra 77 and 87 were banned from high-ranking Nazi officials due to their tendency to oversteer, caused by their unusual weight distribution. Several fatal accidents involving SS officers led to this ban, making these cars unintentional "Nazi killers." This technical peculiarity, linked to innovation, perfectly illustrates the brand's pioneering but sometimes unpredictable spirit.

Tatra model cars occupy a special place in the world of model cars. Their rarity on the model car market reflects the brand's unique position in the real-life automotive industry. These scale models fit perfectly into a collection focused on innovation and originality . They complement admirably the Models of Porsche model cars or Volkswagen model cars , marking the historical links between these manufacturers. For fans of Eastern European vehicles, they naturally match the Skoda model cars or Lada model cars .
Collectors particularly seek out Tatra Models for their exceptional documentary character . Each model tells the story of an era, an innovation, a different approach to the automobile. They attract both automotive history enthusiasts and industrial design fans, seduced by the unique and timeless lines of these Czechoslovak creations.
