History of the original car

The Giulietta TI (Turismo Internazionale) debuted in 1955 in the Alfa Romeo range as a sportier version of the Giulietta saloon. This high-performance variant was designed for demanding drivers who wanted the comfort of a family saloon combined with the performance of a sports car. Its 1300 cc twin-cam engine produced 74 hp, making it one of the liveliest saloons in its class.

The 1958 example shown here represents the peak of the series, benefiting from all the improvements introduced since launch. The body, designed by Bertone, featured pure, balanced lines, while the cabin offered a remarkable level of finish for its time.

The Giulietta TI was a considerable commercial success, especially among keen drivers who appreciated its exceptional roadholding and its distinctly Italian character. It did much to build Alfa Romeo's sporting reputation in the 1950s.

Alfa Romeo in the late 1950s

In 1958, Alfa Romeo was going through a period of renewal under the supervision of IRI (Institute for Industrial Reconstruction). The marque with the Biscione emblem was seeking to make its cars more accessible while preserving its sporting DNA. The Giulietta range, launched three years earlier, perfectly reflected this new strategic direction.

Founded in 1910 in Milan, Alfa Romeo first made its name in motor racing before turning to the production of luxury cars between the wars. Its Grand Prix and 24 Hours of Le Mans victories had built a reputation for technical excellence that the Giulietta TI carried on admirably. This period marked a decisive turning point, when the brand succeeded in combining sporting tradition with mass production, laying the foundations for decades of success.

A legend born on Italian roads

The Giulietta TI owes part of its fame to an event little known to the wider public. In 1958, during the Alpine Rally, a privately entered Giulietta TI driven by a Milanese mechanic named Giuseppe Meroni caused a sensation by finishing in the top ten, ahead of many pure sports cars. This unexpected result made a big stir in the Italian specialist press.

The most entertaining story concerns the distinctive red of many Giulietta TIs. Contrary to popular belief, this shade was not imposed by Alfa Romeo but resulted from a shortage of paint in the immediate postwar years. Red was the most plentiful stock in Italian paint factories, so many manufacturers adopted it out of economic necessity.

The Giulietta TI also had its moment in the cinema. Several examples appeared in Italian films of the late 1950s, notably "Poveri ma belli" by Dino Risi, where it perfectly embodied the social aspirations of Italy's middle class during the economic boom. This media exposure helped cement the car's place in the Italian collective imagination.

An amusing technical detail: Giulietta TI owners had a habit of personalizing their dashboards with small engraved plaques recording their road exploits. This tradition arose spontaneously and showed the special attachment this car inspired in its owners, far beyond its role as a means of transport.

Complete your Italian model car collection

This Alfa Romeo Giulietta TI holds a prime place in the world of Italian model cars. It sits perfectly alongside other iconic models from the Alfa Romeo collection, forming a coherent set that represents the golden age of the Milanese manufacturer.

Passionate collectors will enjoy pairing it with other models from the 1950s range or with European sports saloons of the same era. This model also has a natural place in a collection dedicated to cars with character or to classics from 1950 to 1979.

Whether you are a car history enthusiast or a seasoned collector, this Giulietta TI is an authentic record of an era when Italian motoring shone for its elegance and sportiness. It will complement any collection devoted to 1/43 scale models or to prestige foreign models.

Frequently asked questions

How do model car scales work?

The scale is the reduction ratio between the real car and the model. At 1:43 scale, for example, every centimetre of the model represents 43 centimetres of the real vehicle.

In practice, a 1:18 Ferrari model is about 25–30 cm long, while at 1:43 it measures roughly 10 cm.

Which scales are available?

Our model cars mainly come in 1:43, 1:24, 1:18 and 1:87 (HO) scale. The scale is always listed on the product page.

The smaller the second number, the bigger the model (e.g. 1:18 is larger than 1:43).

Does the model come in a protective case?

Yes, every model car ships in its protective box. The box preserves its collector value and protects your model from dust and knocks.

How is my parcel protected in transit?

We pack every order with great care: bubble wrap, snug padding and polystyrene. Your model car is fully secured on its way to you.

How long does delivery take?

In-stock items ship within 24–48h. Allow 2–3 business days for mainland France with Colissimo, or 4–5 days with Mondial Relay.

The model is out of stock — when will you have it again?

I can't say exactly when new stock will arrive, as it comes in a trickle. Feel free to contact me and I'll let you know as soon as it's available.
