The Real Model: An Exceptional Roadster

The BMW 507 was born in 1955 under the influence of Albrecht von Goertz, a renowned car designer. This prestigious roadster was intended to compete with the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL in the American market, as BMW sought to establish itself across the Atlantic with a high-end model.

Equipped with a 3.2-liter V8 engine producing 150 horsepower, the BMW 507 boasted remarkable performance for its time, with a top speed of 220 km/h. Its hand-sculpted body by Munich artisans combined American fluid lines with traditional European elegance.

Despite its exceptional qualities, the 507 experienced only a limited commercial success. Its high price - comparable to several Porsche 356 - restricted its production to just 252 units between 1956 and 1959, making each unit today an extraordinarily sought-after collectible.

BMW in the 1950s: The Brand's Renaissance

In the mid-1950s, BMW went through a delicate reconstruction period after the upheavals of World War II. Founded in 1916, the Munich brand had to reinvent itself and regain its status in a rapidly changing automotive market.

The creation of the 507 fits into an ambitious strategy aimed at repositioning BMW in the luxury and high-end sports car segment. This era marked the beginning of the "driving pleasure" philosophy that still characterizes the Bavarian brand today. The BMW miniature cars from this period bear witness to this search for excellence and technical innovation that would forge the brand's reputation in the following decades.

Elvis Presley and his BMW 507: A Twisted Tale

One of the most famous anecdotes involving the BMW 507 features none other than Elvis Presley. In 1958, while doing his military service in Germany, the King of Rock'n'Roll fell for a white 507 that he bought used. This car quickly became his favorite means of transport as he traveled the German roads.

However, Elvis's fame posed an unexpected problem: wherever he parked, adoring fans rushed to leave love messages directly on the body of his BMW, using lipstick and markers. Frustrated by these repeated defacements, Elvis decided to repaint his 507 red, hoping to disguise the inscriptions.

This red BMW 507 accompanied Elvis back to the United States in 1960. The car crossed the Atlantic and ended its days in a Californian garage before being rediscovered decades later. Meticulously restored by BMW Classic, it regained its original white color and now resides at the BMW Museum in Munich, a living testament to the era when the 507 mingled with the greatest celebrities of its time.

This story perfectly illustrates how the BMW 507, despite its limited production, managed to mark its era and charm the most notable personalities of the 1950s and 1960s, confirming its status as a timeless automotive icon.

Collectors particularly appreciate pairing it with miniatures from the 1950s, a prolific period of European automotive creativity. This BMW 507 harmoniously dialogues with other convertibles and roadsters of the time, creating cohesive sets that tell the story of prestige automobiles.

Whether you are a beginner collector or an experienced expert, this BMW 507 serves as an excellent anchor point for exploring the world of 1:43 scale miniatures, the preferred format of connoisseurs for its rich details and perfect balance between fidelity and practicality of storage.
