The real model: An automotive monument

The Bugatti Type 41 Royale was designed in 1926 by Ettore Bugatti with a grandiose ambition: to create the most sumptuous and impressive car ever built. Over 6 meters long and powered by a 12.7-liter 8-cylinder engine developing 300 horsepower, it was intended for royal clients and the wealthiest of the time.

This mechanical masterpiece was distinguished by its exceptional dimensions, oversized chassis, and unparalleled craftsmanship. Each example was unique, coachbuilt according to the owner's specific wishes by the greatest French coachbuilders of the time.

Despite its technical excellence and unparalleled prestige, the Royale did not achieve the expected commercial success. The economic crisis of 1929 and its prohibitive price drastically limited its production, making it today one of the rarest and most sought-after automobiles in the world.

Bugatti: French excellence at its peak

By 1929, the Bugatti brand was at the forefront of the global automotive industry. Ettore Bugatti had established his reputation by combining sporting performance with artistic refinement, creating automobiles that were as much works of art as they were technical feats.

The Alsatian company was then at its peak, racking up racing victories with its racing cars while developing prestigious models for an exceptional clientele. This prosperous period, just before the Great Depression, marked the golden age of the double B brand.

Bugatti embodied the French art of living and European technical excellence, rivaling the most prestigious Italian and British brands. The Type 41 Royale represented the culmination of this philosophy, combining power, luxury, and absolute exclusivity.

The Royal anecdote: A thwarted royal destiny

The history of the Bugatti Type 41 Royale is closely linked to a delightful anecdote involving King Alfonso XIII of Spain. During a reception, the latter reportedly remarked to Ettore Bugatti that his cars were "too small" for his royal stature. Stung, the French manufacturer immediately decided to create a car fit for a king.

Ironically, by the time the Royale was completed, Alfonso XIII had been deposed and forced into exile. Ettore Bugatti, upset by what he considered an affront, decided that no king would ever ride in his creation. This haughty decision paradoxically further limited the potential market for this exceptional automobile.

Only six examples were ultimately produced, each with a unique destiny. One of them even served as Ettore Bugatti's personal car, which he used daily to commute to his factory in Molsheim. This prosaic use of a car of this stature is a testament to the Alsatian manufacturer's unique spirit.

The Royale's extreme rarity makes it one of the most valuable cars in the world today. In 1987, a copy sold at auction for a record $8.1 million, setting a new record for a collector's car and confirming the legendary status of this exceptional model.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to understand the scales of miniatures?

Scale indicates the reduction ratio between the real car and the miniature. For example, at 1:43 scale, each centimeter on the miniature corresponds to 43 centimeters on the real vehicle.

Concretely, a 1/18 scale Ferrari model is approximately 25-30 cm long, while in 1/43 scale it measures approximately 10 cm.

What scales are available?

Our model cars are mainly offered in 1/43, 1/24, 1/18 and 1/87 (HO) scales. The scale is always indicated in the product sheet.

The smaller the second number, the larger the model car (e.g. 1/18 is larger than 1/43).

Does the model car come with protection?

Yes, each model car is systematically delivered in its protective box. This box preserves the collectible value and protects your model car from dust and shocks.

How is my package protected during transport?

We package each order with the utmost care: bubble wrap, appropriate cushioning, and polystyrene. Your model car is perfectly secure during its journey.

What is the delivery time?

In-stock items are shipped within 24-48 hours. Please allow 2-3 business days for France via Colissimo or 4-5 days via Mondial Relay.

The model car is no longer in stock, when will you have it?

It's impossible for me to know exactly when I'll receive a new stock because I receive arrivals in dribs and drabs. Please contact me so I can keep you informed as soon as it's available.
