Real Model Description

The General Lee M3 tank was developed urgently by the United States in 1940, in response to the need to quickly produce an armored vehicle capable of competing with the German Panzers. Designed as a transitional solution before the arrival of the Sherman, the M3 featured a unique architecture with its 75mm main gun mounted in the hull, complemented by a turret armed with a 37mm gun.

Measuring over 5 meters in length and weighing 27 tons, this American armored vehicle was distinguished by its tall and massive silhouette. Its armor reached up to 51mm in maximum thickness, and it was powered by a Wright radial engine of 340 horsepower, allowing it to achieve 40 km/h on the road. Despite its tactical flaws, notably its excessive height, the M3 represented a significant improvement over the light tanks available at the time.

Produced in over 6,000 examples, the General Lee experienced a relative success but effectively fulfilled its role as a transition tank, allowing Allied crews to train before the arrival of more performing next-generation armored vehicles.

Solido and the Military Era

When Solido developed its first military miniatures in the 1960s-70s, France rediscovered its heritage from World War II. The French company, then in full expansion, seized the opportunity to offer faithful replicas of historical armored vehicles that had left a mark on minds a generation earlier.

Founded in 1932 by Ferdinand de Vazeilles, Solido initially specialized in civilian vehicles before expanding its range to include historical military vehicles. This diversification reflected the French passion for military history and allowed the brand to stand out in the modeling market. The quality of French manufacturing and the attention to historical details quickly made Solido a must-have reference among Solido miniatures, establishing its reputation well beyond France's borders.

A Legend Born from a Compromise

The story of the General Lee M3 reveals the paradoxes of military production during wartime. Initially, American engineers wanted to create a tank with a rotating turret armed with a powerful 75mm gun. However, time constraints and the technological limitations of the time forced them to mount this gun directly in the hull, creating a rather unusual configuration.

This peculiarity earned the M3 the ironic nickname "mobile coffin" from some British crews, in reference to its tall silhouette that made it a prime target. Paradoxically, this same height allowed for remarkable depression of the hull gun, providing firing capabilities in hilly terrain that conventional tanks lacked.

The name "General Lee" was attributed by the British in homage to the Confederate general Robert E. Lee, in a diplomatic effort to honor American history. The Soviets, on the other hand, more prosaically referred to it as "BM-6" (Boyevaya Mashina), reflecting a more pragmatic approach to this war machine that nevertheless assisted them in their battles on the Eastern Front.

Today, the few surviving examples of the General Lee M3 stand in military museums worldwide, reminding us of a time when ingenuity had to cope with urgency, giving birth to creations that were as imperfect as they were endearing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to understand the scales of miniatures?

Scale indicates the reduction ratio between the real car and the miniature. For example, at 1:43 scale, each centimeter on the miniature corresponds to 43 centimeters on the real vehicle.

Concretely, a 1/18 scale Ferrari model is approximately 25-30 cm long, while in 1/43 scale it measures approximately 10 cm.

What scales are available?

Our model cars are mainly offered in 1/43, 1/24, 1/18 and 1/87 (HO) scales. The scale is always indicated in the product sheet.

The smaller the second number, the larger the model car (e.g. 1/18 is larger than 1/43).

Does the model car come with protection?

Yes, each model car is systematically delivered in its protective box. This box preserves the collectible value and protects your model car from dust and shocks.

How is my package protected during transport?

We package each order with the utmost care: bubble wrap, appropriate cushioning, and polystyrene. Your model car is perfectly secure during its journey.

What is the delivery time?

In-stock items are shipped within 24-48 hours. Please allow 2-3 business days for France via Colissimo or 4-5 days via Mondial Relay.

The model car is no longer in stock, when will you have it?

It's impossible for me to know exactly when I'll receive a new stock because I receive arrivals in dribs and drabs. Please contact me so I can keep you informed as soon as it's available.
