The Citroën 2CV, a French Icon

Launched in 1948 at the Paris Motor Show, the Citroën 2CV was designed by Pierre Boulanger as "an umbrella on four wheels." The goal was to motorize rural France with a simple, economical, and robust vehicle capable of transporting "a farmer in clogs, his wife, and a sack of potatoes across the fields."

With its air-cooled two-cylinder engine and revolutionary suspension, the 2CV revolutionized popular French transport. Its exceptional versatility and ease of maintenance quickly made it a commercial success, with over 5 million units produced between 1948 and 1990.

This remarkable adaptability allowed the 2CV to be developed into many specialized versions, including professional variants such as the AK and AZU vans, as well as more unique adaptations to meet the specific needs of various professions.

Citroën in the Era of the 2CV

During the development of the 2CV, Citroën was undergoing a period of post-war reconstruction. André Citroën had sold his company to Michelin in 1935, and the brand with the chevrons was seeking to reclaim the popular French market against competition from Renault and Peugeot.

Citroën's philosophy at the time was to offer innovative and democratic automotive solutions. This approach would later materialize with the DS in 1955, but the 2CV was already a revolution due to its simplicity of use and accessible price. The brand relied on French engineering to create different vehicles, tailored to the real needs of users rather than the aesthetic standards of the time.

A Versatility Beyond Imagination

The story of the 2CV hearse perfectly illustrates the extraordinary adaptability of this mythical model. In the 1950s and 1960s, several funeral homes, particularly in rural areas, used the 2CV to provide their services, especially in hard-to-reach rural zones.

The legendary robustness of the Deudeuche and its ability to navigate all types of terrain made it a pragmatic choice for accessing isolated cemeteries or mountain villages. Some specialized coachbuilders developed specific trailers, transforming the modest 2CV into a true economical hearse.

This use reflects the French ingenuity of the time, where available means were adapted to local needs. The 2CV served as both a country taxi and a delivery vehicle, a rural doctor’s car, or, as here, a rural hearse. This exceptional versatility significantly contributed to anchoring the 2CV in French cultural heritage.

Today, these uncommon versions of the 2CV bring smiles and emotions, recalling a time when simplicity and efficiency took precedence over prestige. They symbolize a French art of living characterized by resourcefulness and authenticity, values perfectly embodied by the 2CV.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to understand the scales of miniatures?

Scale indicates the reduction ratio between the real car and the miniature. For example, at 1:43 scale, each centimeter on the miniature corresponds to 43 centimeters on the real vehicle.

Concretely, a 1/18 scale Ferrari model is approximately 25-30 cm long, while in 1/43 scale it measures approximately 10 cm.

What scales are available?

Our model cars are mainly offered in 1/43, 1/24, 1/18 and 1/87 (HO) scales. The scale is always indicated in the product sheet.

The smaller the second number, the larger the model car (e.g. 1/18 is larger than 1/43).

Does the model car come with protection?

Yes, each model car is systematically delivered in its protective box. This box preserves the collectible value and protects your model car from dust and shocks.

How is my package protected during transport?

We package each order with the utmost care: bubble wrap, appropriate cushioning, and polystyrene. Your model car is perfectly secure during its journey.

What is the delivery time?

In-stock items are shipped within 24-48 hours. Please allow 2-3 business days for France via Colissimo or 4-5 days via Mondial Relay.

The model car is no longer in stock, when will you have it?

It's impossible for me to know exactly when I'll receive a new stock because I receive arrivals in dribs and drabs. Please contact me so I can keep you informed as soon as it's available.
