The story of the original Fiat 600D

Launched in 1955, the Fiat 600 revolutionized the Italian automotive landscape by democratizing access to individual cars. The 600D version, introduced in 1960, brought significant improvements over the original model, notably a more powerful 767 cm³ engine developing 29 horsepower, compared to 633 cm³ for the first generation.

This small sedan with rear engine and rear-wheel drive embodies Italian ingenuity of the time. Its compact design, created by Dante Giacosa, brilliantly optimizes interior space despite reduced external dimensions. The 600D is distinguished by its larger headlights and improved finishes compared to the initial model.

A commercial success, the Fiat 600D actively contributed to the Italian economic miracle of the 1960s, allowing thousands of families to finally access automotive mobility.

Fiat in the 1960s: the golden age of the Turin brand

During this prosperous era, Fiat established itself as the undisputed leader of the Italian automotive market and one of the major manufacturers in Europe. Under the enlightened management of Vittorio Valletta, the Turin company developed a particularly effective automobile democratization strategy.

The brand with the round logo revolutionized mass production in Italy, drawing inspiration from American Fordist methods while adapting them to the European context. This approach enabled Fiat to offer reliable, economical, and accessible vehicles to the widest audience.

The history of Fiat, founded in 1899 by Giovanni Agnelli, took on a new dimension in the 1960s with international expansion and the development of iconic models such as the 600, 500, and 124.

The Fiat 600D: symbol of the Italian economic boom

The Fiat 600D quickly became much more than just a car: it symbolizes the social ascent of the Italian middle class in the 1960s. This small sedan faithfully accompanied Italian families on their first great journeys, particularly to the seaside resorts of the peninsula.

A delightful anecdote recounts that many 600D owners transformed their vehicles into true “mobile homes” for summer vacations. The roof was loaded with bulky luggage, the cabin sometimes hosted up to six people, and some did not hesitate to attach homemade trailers to carry camping gear.

The legendary robustness of the 600D also gave it an unexpected second life in the world of popular tuning. Many amateur mechanics transformed these small Fiats into true racing machines by tuning the rear engine, thus creating a particularly active underground automotive scene in southern Italy.

This exceptional versatility made the Fiat 600D a true social phenomenon, transcending its simple status as a means of transport to become a symbol of freedom and social emancipation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to understand the scales of miniatures?

Scale indicates the reduction ratio between the real car and the miniature. For example, at 1:43 scale, each centimeter on the miniature corresponds to 43 centimeters on the real vehicle.

Concretely, a 1/18 scale Ferrari model is approximately 25-30 cm long, while in 1/43 scale it measures approximately 10 cm.

What scales are available?

Our model cars are mainly offered in 1/43, 1/24, 1/18 and 1/87 (HO) scales. The scale is always indicated in the product sheet.

The smaller the second number, the larger the model car (e.g. 1/18 is larger than 1/43).

Does the model car come with protection?

Yes, each model car is systematically delivered in its protective box. This box preserves the collectible value and protects your model car from dust and shocks.

How is my package protected during transport?

We package each order with the utmost care: bubble wrap, appropriate cushioning, and polystyrene. Your model car is perfectly secure during its journey.

What is the delivery time?

In-stock items are shipped within 24-48 hours. Please allow 2-3 business days for France via Colissimo or 4-5 days via Mondial Relay.

The model car is no longer in stock, when will you have it?

It's impossible for me to know exactly when I'll receive a new stock because I receive arrivals in dribs and drabs. Please contact me so I can keep you informed as soon as it's available.
