This yellow Matra Simca Bagheera miniature from Del Prado precisely captures the essence of one of the most unique coupes of the 70s. Faithfully reproduced at 1/43 scale, this little technical marvel displays the characteristic yellow hue that symbolized the innovative spirit of this exceptional French collaboration.
A true witness to an era when French automotive boldness shone, this collectible miniature will appeal to motorsport enthusiasts as well as fans of heritage objects. It perfectly embodies the revolutionary soul of a model that marked the history of the French automobile.
Launched in 1973, the Matra Simca Bagheera revolutionized the segment of affordable sports coupes. This bold creation emerged from the collaboration between Matra, a specialist in cutting-edge technologies, and Simca, a French subsidiary of Chrysler. The project aimed to democratize the joy of sporty driving by offering an accessible alternative to the Ferraris and Porsches of the time.
The Bagheera stands out with its revolutionary three-seat front architecture, a world-unique configuration that accommodates three passengers side by side. Its tubular steel chassis, inherited from Matra's competition experience, supports a polyester body that guarantees optimal corrosion resistance while significantly reducing weight.
Powered by the 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine from the Simca 1100 Ti, then by a 1.6-liter version developing 90 horsepower, it offers respectable performance with a top speed of 170 km/h. Its commercial success, with over 47,000 units produced, confirms the relevance of this innovative concept that attracts a clientele seeking originality.
In the 70s, Matra became the French symbol of automotive and aeronautical innovation. The company, led by Jean-Luc Lagardère, relied on technological excellence inherited from its aerospace and Formula 1 activities. This unique expertise materialized in groundbreaking technical solutions that revolutionized the traditional approach to automotive construction.
The collaboration with Simca proved strategic, allowing Matra to access proven distribution circuits and engines from the brand with the chevron. This French-French synergy perfectly illustrates the industrial ambition of the 70s, a time when France emerged as a major automotive power alongside Peugeot and Renault.
This productive alliance gave rise to a complete range, from the Bagheera to the legendary Murena, consolidating Matra's reputation as a creator of accessible and technically advanced sports coupes. The legacy of this collaboration continues to inspire contemporary manufacturers in search of innovation.
The name "Bagheera" draws inspiration from the world of Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book, where this black panther symbolizes agility and feline elegance. This bold marketing choice perfectly reflects Matra's ambition: to create a mechanical feline capable of gracefully leaping through the winding French roads.
Legend has it that the design of this three-seat front configuration stemmed from a technical constraint cleverly turned into a commercial advantage. Matra engineers, faced with the wheelbase limitations imposed by the standards of the time, devised this revolutionary solution that allowed three passengers to be accommodated without increasing the vehicle’s length.
This particularity especially appealed to single-parent families and couples with a child, creating an unprecedented market segment. The Bagheera quickly became the emblem of a generation of French motorists refusing to choose between family practicality and driving pleasure, perfectly embodying the libertarian spirit of the 70s.
Its notable presence in several French films of the time, notably alongside stars like Alain Delon, reinforces its status as a cultural icon and confirms its influence on the French automotive imagination of this flamboyant decade.
This Matra Simca Bagheera Del Prado holds a special place in the world of French miniatures from the 1970s. Its faithful reproduction of characteristic details—from pop-up headlights to the taut lines of Philippe Guédon—makes it an essential model for any collector passionate about exceptional Hexagonal automobiles.
It harmoniously pairs with other French sports cars from this golden era, including the Alpine Renault A110 and A310, as well as Citroën SM creations. This complementarity allows for a true panorama of French automotive innovation in the seventies, a prosperous period when our manufacturers competed in technical and aesthetic boldness.
Targeted at both savvy collectors and curious newcomers wanting to discover mythical French cars, this miniature also serves as an excellent entry point into the world of Del Prado creations, known for their quality finish and adherence to original proportions.
