The Porsche 356A: A Major Evolution

The Porsche 356A marked a crucial step in the history of the German brand. Launched in 1955, it succeeded the 356 "Pre-A" and brought significant technical improvements that would define Porsche's sports DNA for decades to come. This "A" version was notably distinguished by its single-piece curved windshield, replacing the split windshield of its predecessor, and by its enhanced performance.

Equipped with an air-cooled flat-four engine, the 356A developed between 60 and 75 horsepower depending on the version. Its aerodynamic aluminum body, directly inherited from Ferdinand Porsche's studies, gave it a pure and timeless line. The tubular chassis and optimized weight distribution offered exceptional road behavior for the time, laying the groundwork for Porsche's reputation in dynamism.

Marketed until 1959, the 356A enjoyed notable commercial success with nearly 21,000 units produced. It democratized access to quality sports cars while preserving the exclusivity and technical refinement that already characterized the brand.

Porsche in the 1950s: The Assertion of a Legend

At the time of the creation of the 356A, Porsche was still a young independent company seeking to establish itself in the automotive market. Officially founded in 1948 by Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche, son of the famous engineer Ferdinand Porsche, the company began automobile production with the original 356, initially manufactured in Gmünd, Austria before transferring to Stuttgart.

However, Porsche's history dates back to the 1930s, when Ferdinand Porsche Sr. established his independent design office in 1931. A genius engineer, he had already worked for prestigious brands like Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union, notably designing the legendary mid-engine Grand Prix cars of the 1930s. His technical expertise and avant-garde vision laid the foundations of what would become one of the most respected automotive brands in the world.

The 1950s represented a pivotal period when Porsche had to prove its ability to reconcile technical innovation with commercial viability. The 356A exemplified this philosophy perfectly, offering authentic sports performance in an accessible package, while maintaining the engineering excellence that already characterized the Porsche family's creations. This unique approach would define the brand's identity for future generations.

The Anecdote of the 356A: When Porsche Conquered America

One of the most striking stories of the Porsche 356A concerns its conquest of the American market, a territory then dominated by large local cars with V8 engines. In 1955, American importer Max Hoffman, a visionary in automotive trade, bet on the success of this small European sports car despite general skepticism.

Legend has it that during a demonstration in New York, a potential customer, used to powerful American cars, scoffed upon seeing the modest 356A with its 1.6-liter engine. The salesperson then offered a challenge: to circle Manhattan with both cars. Result: the Porsche arrived 20 minutes before the American car, having navigated effortlessly through New York traffic due to its compactness and agility.

This demonstration became a case study and helped change the American perception of sports cars. The 356A quickly became a symbol of a new automotive refinement, prioritizing technical intelligence over raw power. Celebrities like James Dean adopted the brand, helping to forge the Porsche myth across the Atlantic.

This American success marked a major cultural turning point: it proved that a car could be both performant and elegant without being imposing. The 356A thus paved the way for a whole generation of European sports cars in the American market, redefining the codes of automotive prestige and influencing the tastes of car enthusiasts worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to understand the scales of miniatures?

Scale indicates the reduction ratio between the real car and the miniature. For example, at 1:43 scale, each centimeter on the miniature corresponds to 43 centimeters on the real vehicle.

Concretely, a 1/18 scale Ferrari model is approximately 25-30 cm long, while in 1/43 scale it measures approximately 10 cm.

What scales are available?

Our model cars are mainly offered in 1/43, 1/24, 1/18 and 1/87 (HO) scales. The scale is always indicated in the product sheet.

The smaller the second number, the larger the model car (e.g. 1/18 is larger than 1/43).

Does the model car come with protection?

Yes, each model car is systematically delivered in its protective box. This box preserves the collectible value and protects your model car from dust and shocks.

How is my package protected during transport?

We package each order with the utmost care: bubble wrap, appropriate cushioning, and polystyrene. Your model car is perfectly secure during its journey.

What is the delivery time?

In-stock items are shipped within 24-48 hours. Please allow 2-3 business days for France via Colissimo or 4-5 days via Mondial Relay.

The model car is no longer in stock, when will you have it?

It's impossible for me to know exactly when I'll receive a new stock because I receive arrivals in dribs and drabs. Please contact me so I can keep you informed as soon as it's available.
