The Simca 1000 and the "ass car" phenomenon
The Simca 1000 belonged to that particular family of rear-engined cars that marked the 1960s. Alongside the Renault 8, the Volkswagen Beetle and the Chevrolet Corvair, it was part of a technical movement that advocated the advantages of the rear engine: better traction, more spacious interior and accessible front trunk .
This particular configuration gave rise to specific road behaviors, particularly in curves where the pendulum effect of the rear engine could surprise unwary drivers. Rally drivers of the time had developed specific driving techniques to exploit this architecture, creating a true art of "heavy-ass" driving.
The Simca 1000 also distinguished itself in competition, notably at the Monte-Carlo Rally where it achieved several class victories in the 1960s. This sporting success helped to forge the model's dynamic image among the general public.
Paradoxically, what made these cars technically unique in the 1960s became their main handicap in the 1970s, as tastes shifted towards more conventional and reassuring front-engined saloons.
