The original model: a multi-purpose war vehicle

The Dodge Command Car was developed in the early 1940s to meet the U.S. Army's specific requirements for command and liaison vehicles. Based on the civilian Dodge platform, it benefited from substantial military modifications: reinforced bodywork, radio equipment, light armor protection, and improved off-road capability.

This vehicle was distinguished by its exceptional robustness and mechanical reliability, essential qualities in the difficult conditions of military operations. Its open design facilitated communication between occupants and allowed for rapid evacuation in case of danger. The model could carry up to six people and was used both for transporting officers and for transporting sensitive equipment.

Produced in tens of thousands of units, the Command Car quickly became indispensable to Allied operations , actively participating in the campaigns in North Africa, Italy, Normandy and the Pacific.

Dodge in the American war effort

During World War II, Dodge Motors mobilized its entire manufacturing capacity to support the American war effort. The Chrysler Corporation subsidiary converted its civilian production lines to meet the federal government's massive military orders.

Dodge's expertise in building rugged utility vehicles proved perfectly suited to military requirements. The brand's engineers developed a complete line of specialized vehicles: ambulances, transport trucks, reconnaissance vehicles, and, of course, the famous Command Cars. This military production accounted for more than 60% of Dodge's business between 1942 and 1945.

This period had a profound impact on the brand's identity, which maintained a reputation for excellence in the field of professional and military vehicles for a long time after the war.

A little-known historical anecdote

One of the most famous Command Cars belonged to General George S. Patton , commander of the U.S. Third Army. His customized Dodge, nicknamed "Fair Weather," accompanied him throughout the French Campaign in 1944. The vehicle was easily recognizable thanks to its special license plates and the four-star general's insignia painted on the hood.

A particularly comical episode involving this Command Car took place in August 1944, near Chartres. Patton, eager to rejoin his forward units, ordered his driver to take back roads to avoid the traffic jams of the main column. Unfortunately, the Dodge got stuck in a freshly plowed field, forcing the formidable general to be towed by a French farm tractor.

This mishap, immortalized by several war photographers, made the rounds of Allied units and paradoxically contributed to strengthening Patton's popularity with his men, who appreciated seeing their leader share their daily difficulties. The incident also demonstrated the robustness of the Command Car, which, despite getting stuck, set off again without any mechanical damage.

Now preserved at the Patton Museum at Fort Knox, this particular Command Car remains one of the most moving witnesses to the epic tale of American armored forces in Europe.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to understand the scales of miniatures?

Scale indicates the reduction ratio between the real car and the miniature. For example, at 1:43 scale, each centimeter on the miniature corresponds to 43 centimeters on the real vehicle.

Concretely, a 1/18 scale Ferrari model is approximately 25-30 cm long, while in 1/43 scale it measures approximately 10 cm.

What scales are available?

Our model cars are mainly offered in 1/43, 1/24, 1/18 and 1/87 (HO) scales. The scale is always indicated in the product sheet.

The smaller the second number, the larger the model car (e.g. 1/18 is larger than 1/43).

Does the model car come with protection?

Yes, each model car is systematically delivered in its protective box. This box preserves the collectible value and protects your model car from dust and shocks.

How is my package protected during transport?

We package each order with the utmost care: bubble wrap, appropriate cushioning, and polystyrene. Your model car is perfectly secure during its journey.

What is the delivery time?

In-stock items are shipped within 24-48 hours. Please allow 2-3 business days for France via Colissimo or 4-5 days via Mondial Relay.

The model car is no longer in stock, when will you have it?

It's impossible for me to know exactly when I'll receive a new stock because I receive arrivals in dribs and drabs. Please contact me so I can keep you informed as soon as it's available.
