Packard's Prestigious History
Founded in 1899 by brothers James Ward and William Doud Packard, the Packard Motor Car Company quickly became synonymous with luxury and innovation in the American automotive industry. Based in Detroit, the brand distinguished itself through its relentless pursuit of technical excellence and careful attention to detail.
During its heyday, from the 1920s to the 1950s, Packard competed directly with Cadillac, Lincoln, and Chrysler Imperial in the luxury segment. The brand was particularly renowned for its technically sophisticated V8 and V12 engines , as well as for its elegant bodywork designed by the best designers of the time.
Packard's golden age was the 1930s , when the company produced some of the finest automobiles in the world. The Super Eight and Twelve models from this era remain the gold standard for luxury automobiles today.
Packard and the Golden Age of the American Automobile
A striking anecdote perfectly illustrates Packard's prestige: the brand was so renowned that it gave rise to the popular American expression "Ask the man who owns one." This advertising slogan, which has become legendary, testified to the absolute confidence Packard owners had in their automobile.
The brand was also the preferred choice of many influential figures, from Hollywood stars to wealthy businessmen. Franklin D. Roosevelt used a Packard as his presidential vehicle, further reinforcing the brand's prestigious image.
This cultural dimension makes Packard much more than just a car brand: it embodies an art of living and an era when the automobile was considered a true rolling art object.
