This Dinky-Toys model issued by Atlas faithfully recreates the iconic Studebaker truck in its canvas-covered version, sporting a bright red body accented by the signature yellow tarpaulin. This authentic model captures the spirit of the American commercial vehicles that left their mark on mid-20th-century commercial transport.
A true collector's item, this Dinky-Toys replica carries on the tradition of excellence of this legendary brand, offering car enthusiasts and collectors a remarkable piece that evokes the golden age of the American automotive industry.
The Studebaker tapissière belonged to a generation of light trucks that revolutionized American commercial transport in the post-war years. Launched to meet growing needs for urban delivery and goods transport, this vehicle stood out for its sturdy, practical design, suited to the demands of local trade.
Fitted with a canvas-covered body that carried goods sheltered from the weather, this Studebaker offered optimal load capacity while remaining highly maneuverable in town. Its reliable engine and proven chassis made it a favorite of shopkeepers and craftsmen of the day.
The commercial success of this model is explained by its exceptional versatility: food deliveries, tool transport, light removals. Every line of business found its use in its adaptable cargo space and ease of operation.
Founded in 1852 by the Studebaker brothers as a wagon maker, the Studebaker Corporation gradually established itself as one of America's most innovative automakers. In the 1940s and 1950s, the period to which this canvas-covered model belongs, Studebaker enjoyed its industrial golden age, rivaling the Detroit giants with its forward-looking designs and original engineering solutions.
The South Bend company particularly excelled in commercial vehicles, developing a full range of light and medium trucks that met the specific needs of the American market. Studebaker engineers excelled at designing functional bodies, like this canvas-covered version that optimized cargo space while keeping the truck easy to drive.
This prosperous era for Studebaker coincided with the post-war economic boom, when demand for commercial vehicles was literally exploding. The brand seized the opportunity by offering solutions suited to the new distribution and retail methods taking shape in the prosperous America of the 1950s.
The story of these Studebaker canvas-covered trucks is closely tied to the transformation of American retail after the war. In the 1940s and 1950s, these vehicles rode alongside a real revolution: the rise of local shops and home deliveries in the suburbs spreading around America's major cities.
A particularly fun story involves the Chicago bakers who, in the 1950s, used these Studebaker tapissières extensively for their morning rounds. The particular configuration of these trucks, with their removable canvas cover, provided natural ventilation ideal for transporting fresh bread. The bakers had devised a clever system: they partially rolled back the cover to create an airflow that kept their products at the ideal temperature during deliveries.
These trucks also became the loyal companions of street vendors who roamed the new residential neighborhoods. Their versatility made it easy to quickly adapt the cargo space to the day's needs: fruit and vegetables in the morning, household goods in the afternoon, and sometimes even show equipment on weekends for traveling fairground performers.
The cultural impact of these vehicles goes far beyond their utilitarian role. They helped shape the visual identity of post-war America, becoming familiar fixtures of urban and suburban streetscapes. Their bright colors, like this signature red and yellow, brightened the streets and contributed to the optimistic atmosphere of the American "Golden Fifties."
This Studebaker tapissière Dinky-Toys model fits naturally into the fascinating world of commercial vehicles in scale models. It pairs perfectly with theme collections devoted to light commercial vehicles or commercial vehicles that trace the evolution of professional transport.
Collectors passionate about American brands will especially appreciate this piece, which harmoniously complements a collection dedicated to foreign cars or, more specifically, to other foreign brands. It also pairs nicely with other replicas from the period, notably the 1950s models that share the same authentic aesthetic.
This miniature appeals as much to seasoned collectors as to automotive history enthusiasts eager to relive the glorious era of the American industry. Its Dinky-Toys manufacture, re-issued by Atlas, guarantees faithful reproduction quality, making it a lasting investment for any serious collection. It is also an excellent entry point into the world of Dinky-Toys miniatures and their essential legacy in the world of scale model cars.

The scale is the reduction ratio between the real car and the model. At 1:43 scale, for example, every centimetre of the model represents 43 centimetres of the real vehicle.
In practice, a 1:18 Ferrari model is about 25–30 cm long, while at 1:43 it measures roughly 10 cm.
Our model cars mainly come in 1:43, 1:24, 1:18 and 1:87 (HO) scale. The scale is always listed on the product page.
The smaller the second number, the bigger the model (e.g. 1:18 is larger than 1:43).
Yes, every model car ships in its protective box. The box preserves its collector value and protects your model from dust and knocks.
We pack every order with great care: bubble wrap, snug padding and polystyrene. Your model car is fully secured on its way to you.
In-stock items ship within 24–48h. Allow 2–3 business days for mainland France with Colissimo, or 4–5 days with Mondial Relay.
I can't say exactly when new stock will arrive, as it comes in a trickle. Feel free to contact me and I'll let you know as soon as it's available.
