The history of the Fiat 600

Launched in 1955, the Fiat 600 was born from Fiat's desire to democratize the automobile in Italy. Designed by Dante Giacosa, it succeeded the Topolino with the ambition to offer a true family car at an accessible price. The D version, introduced in 1960, brought significant improvements to the original model.

This little revolutionary adopted a rear-engine and rear-wheel drive architecture, allowing for optimized living space despite its compact dimensions of 3.22 meters. Its four-cylinder engine of 633 cm³ develops 29 horsepower, sufficient to propel its 580 kilos to a top speed of 95 km/h. The 600D improves power to 32 horsepower and perfects the suspensions.

The success was immediate and lasting: more than 2.6 million units were produced until 1969, making the 600 one of the most popular cars in Europe. It massively contributed to the motorization of post-war Italy.

Fiat in the 1960s

In 1963, Fiat was going through an exceptional expansion period under the guidance of Vittorio Valletta. The Turin company took advantage of the Italian and European economic boom to consolidate its position as the national leader and establish itself as a major player on the continent.

Founded in 1899 by Giovanni Agnelli, Fiat had already built a solid reputation with iconic models such as the Topolino. In the 1960s, the brand with the redesigned logo focused on a comprehensive range strategy: from the small 500 to the luxurious 2300, passing through the revolutionary 850. This approach allowed Fiat to reach all segments of the European car market, from young drivers to wealthy families, thus consolidating its position as a reference generalist manufacturer.

The 600 and the Italian economic miracle

The Fiat 600 perfectly embodies the "miracolo economico" of Italy in the 1960s. In a transforming Italy, it became the symbol of the social rise of millions of families. For the first time, Italian workers could afford a real car, abandoning the family Vespa for four wheels and a roof.

The sociological impact was considerable: the 600 allowed Italians to discover their own country. The first major family vacations, weekends at the sea from Milan or Turin, family visits between the industrial North and the agricultural South... The small Fiat revolutionized lifestyles and actively participated in the cultural unification of the peninsula.

A tasty anecdote illustrates its popularity: during the filming of the movie "Il Sorpasso" in 1962, Dino Risi deliberately chose a Lancia Aurelia instead of a 600 for his main character, fearing that the Fiat would be "too common" for a film meant to be distinctive. Paradoxically, this apparent ordinariness testified to the phenomenal success of the little sedan in the Italian landscape.

The 600 also inspired many European and international manufacturers, who developed their own versions under license, from Spain (SEAT 600) to Argentina, thus spreading Italian design to all corners of the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to understand the scales of miniatures?

Scale indicates the reduction ratio between the real car and the miniature. For example, at 1:43 scale, each centimeter on the miniature corresponds to 43 centimeters on the real vehicle.

Concretely, a 1/18 scale Ferrari model is approximately 25-30 cm long, while in 1/43 scale it measures approximately 10 cm.

What scales are available?

Our model cars are mainly offered in 1/43, 1/24, 1/18 and 1/87 (HO) scales. The scale is always indicated in the product sheet.

The smaller the second number, the larger the model car (e.g. 1/18 is larger than 1/43).

Does the model car come with protection?

Yes, each model car is systematically delivered in its protective box. This box preserves the collectible value and protects your model car from dust and shocks.

How is my package protected during transport?

We package each order with the utmost care: bubble wrap, appropriate cushioning, and polystyrene. Your model car is perfectly secure during its journey.

What is the delivery time?

In-stock items are shipped within 24-48 hours. Please allow 2-3 business days for France via Colissimo or 4-5 days via Mondial Relay.

The model car is no longer in stock, when will you have it?

It's impossible for me to know exactly when I'll receive a new stock because I receive arrivals in dribs and drabs. Please contact me so I can keep you informed as soon as it's available.
