The Hotchkiss PL20, a reference utility vehicle

The Hotchkiss PL20 was launched in 1952 to meet the growing commercial transport needs of the post-war period. This robust van perfectly embodied the spirit of reconstruction and economic dynamism that characterized 1950s France. Equipped with a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 52 horsepower, it offered a remarkable payload capacity of 1.5 tons.

Its design prioritized reliability and versatility, featuring a particularly durable all-steel body and a proven chassis derived from military techniques mastered by Hotchkiss. The PL20 was distinguished by its characteristic grille and functional lines that made it an instantly recognizable vehicle on French roads.

The commercial success was immediate, especially among major French companies that found a reliable working tool for their delivery rounds and traveling advertising campaigns. The PL20 made a significant contribution to the revival of the French automotive industry in the post-war period.

Hotchkiss, from arms to automobiles

In the early 1950s, during the creation of the PL20, Hotchkiss was undergoing a major conversion. Historically specialized in armaments and military vehicles, the company founded in 1867 by Benjamin Berkeley Hotchkiss was resolutely shifting towards the civilian market to ensure its longevity in a context of regained peace.

This transition was part of the diversification strategy pursued since the 1930s, when Hotchkiss began developing prestige automobiles. The brand had already built a solid reputation with its luxury cars and all-terrain vehicles, gaining valuable expertise in terms of robustness and mechanical reliability.

The history of Hotchkiss reflects this remarkable adaptability, from its beginnings as a Parisian arms manufacturer to its evolution into a recognized automobile manufacturer. This technical versatility, inherited from decades of innovation in armaments and precision mechanics, naturally found its way into the design of utility vehicles like the PL20.

The saga of the Perrier tours

In the 1950s, Perrier advertising vans were an integral part of the French landscape. These vehicles, clad in distinctive colors, traveled the territory to supply cafés, restaurants, and grocery stores, actively contributing to the democratization of sparkling water in France. Their tours punctuated the life of small towns and villages, creating a direct link between the brand and consumers.

The white and green livery became so iconic that the arrival of a Perrier vehicle marked a true local event. The delivery drivers, true ambassadors of the brand, maintained privileged relationships with their customers, helping to forge Perrier's reputation for proximity and authenticity.

These tours also contributed to the effort of modernizing French commerce. By offering regular and reliable delivery service, Perrier supported merchants in their development, allowing them to offer fresh and quality products to their customers. This innovative commercial strategy greatly contributed to the brand's success throughout the territory.

The use of the Hotchkiss PL20 for these tours is a testament to the trust placed in this model by the major French companies. Its robustness and reliability made it the ideal partner for these demanding daily missions, where service regularity took precedence over all other criteria.

This is my ... nth order at Bernard Miniatures, and I must admit that I find it difficult to find negative points! The only one being my difficulty in resisting the urge to order one or two models from time to time ... The orders arrive on time, the models are carefully packaged; Perfect!!
