The Story of the Type 49B

Developed in 1968 by Colin Chapman, the Lotus Type 49B is the natural evolution of the original Type 49. This single-seater marked a turning point in Formula 1 with the introduction of the Ford-Cosworth DFV engine, which would dominate the sport for nearly fifteen years. A well-known story tells that after his win at Monaco in 1970, Rindt told his wife: "This car makes me feel like I'm flying above the track." Unfortunately, that sense of freedom concealed a structural weakness that would cost the driver his life during practice at Monza, a few months before he posthumously clinched the world title.
