The Story of the MG Metro 6R4
The MG Metro 6R4 was born in 1985 out of British Leyland's ambition to conquer rallies with the new Group B regulations. Based on the modest Metro, this rally bomb would undergo a radical transformation: a 3.0-liter V6 engine developing 410 horsepower, all-wheel drive, and a widened body to accommodate massive wheels.
The 6R4 project (six cylinders, four-wheel drive) represented a significant investment for the British manufacturer. Despite its impressive power and modern architecture, the Metro 6R4 suffered from an imperfect chassis and delicate tuning that limited its success in competition.
The brutal ban on Group B in 1986, following a series of tragic accidents that season, would sound the death knell for this ambitious machine before it could express its full potential in rallying.
MG in the 80s
In the 1980s, the MG brand went through a complex period under British Leyland, which later became Austin Rover Group. The sporting tradition of MG had to deal with economic constraints and industrial restructurings that shook British automobile manufacturing.
The Metro 6R4 project paradoxically represented both a return to MG's sporting roots and a technological leap forward. While the road range was essentially limited to the sporty versions of the Austin Metro and Maestro, this foray into high-level rallying restored prestige to the octagon. The brand sought to regain the sporting aura that had built its reputation with the legendary roadsters of previous decades while adapting to the codes of modern motorsport.
The McRae Legacy
The McRae/Grindrod crew who drove this Metro 6R4 number 15 deserves special attention. Jimmy McRae, the driver, is none other than the father of future world rally champion Colin McRae. This participation in the 1986 RAC Rally is part of a true Scottish rally dynasty.
Jimmy McRae was already a respected figure in British rallying, a multiple winner of the national championship. His collaboration with Ian Grindrod as co-driver formed an experienced duo, perfectly adapted to the British specials known for their difficulty and diversity of surfaces.
The 1986 RAC Rally will be remembered as one of the last appearances of the Group B monsters. This event, held in particularly difficult winter conditions, saw the most beautiful machinery of the time go head-to-head: Audi Quattro, Lancia Delta S4, Ford RS200, and of course this MG Metro 6R4. The atmosphere was electric, between pure performance and constant danger, characteristic of that bygone era of world rallying.
This race also symbolically marked the end of an era for British motorsport, the Metro 6R4 representing the last serious attempt by an English manufacturer to shine at the highest levels of international rallying.

Frequently Asked Questions
How to understand the scales of miniatures?
Scale indicates the reduction ratio between the real car and the miniature. For example, at 1:43 scale, each centimeter on the miniature corresponds to 43 centimeters on the real vehicle.
Concretely, a 1/18 scale Ferrari model is approximately 25-30 cm long, while in 1/43 scale it measures approximately 10 cm.
What scales are available?
Our model cars are mainly offered in 1/43, 1/24, 1/18 and 1/87 (HO) scales. The scale is always indicated in the product sheet.
The smaller the second number, the larger the model car (e.g. 1/18 is larger than 1/43).
Does the model car come with protection?
Yes, each model car is systematically delivered in its protective box. This box preserves the collectible value and protects your model car from dust and shocks.
How is my package protected during transport?
We package each order with the utmost care: bubble wrap, appropriate cushioning, and polystyrene. Your model car is perfectly secure during its journey.
What is the delivery time?
In-stock items are shipped within 24-48 hours. Please allow 2-3 business days for France via Colissimo or 4-5 days via Mondial Relay.
The model car is no longer in stock, when will you have it?
It's impossible for me to know exactly when I'll receive a new stock because I receive arrivals in dribs and drabs. Please contact me so I can keep you informed as soon as it's available.
