The Peugeot 403 sedan in its two-tone beige and light brown livery represents one of the most iconic miniatures from the Dinky-Toys collection published by Atlas. This faithful 1/43 scale replica perfectly captures the understated elegance of the French sedan that defined the 1950s-1960s.
This miniature is a must-have for any collector passionate about classic French cars, showcasing Dinky-Toys' craftsmanship in replicating popular vehicles of the era.
Launched in April 1955 at the New York Auto Show, the Peugeot 403 marked a major stylistic break for the Sochaux manufacturer. Designed by Italian coachbuilder Pininfarina, it abandoned the angular lines of its predecessors for more rounded and modern shapes, characteristic of 1950s automotive design.
Equipped with a 1.3-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 58 horsepower, the 403 stands out with its legendary robustness and exemplary reliability. Its monocoque body, a technical innovation of the time, gives it remarkable rigidity while optimizing space. The vehicle offers a spacious trunk and a comfortable cabin for five passengers, perfectly meeting the expectations of French families of the time.
Produced in over 1.2 million units until 1966, the 403 enjoyed resounding commercial success, confirming Peugeot's post-war resurgence and laying the foundation for the manufacturer’s modern range.
When the 403 came to life, Peugeot was undergoing a major transformation period. Having overcome the challenges of Occupation and Reconstruction, the Sochaux brand established itself as one of the key players in the French automotive industry. This decade marked the modernization of its production methods and the opening towards export markets.
Founded in 1810 by Jean-Pierre and Jean-Frédéric Peugeot, the family business evolved from metallurgy to automotive in 1889. In the 1950s, under the leadership of Auguste Peugeot, the brand focused on technical innovation and Italian design to attract a bourgeois clientele seeking modernity. This successful strategy enabled Peugeot to assert itself against competitors Citroën and Renault in the domestic market.
While the 403 sedan marked French roads, paradoxically, its convertible version granted it an unexpected worldwide fame. In 1971, American producer Richard Levinson sought a car to embody Inspector Columbo, portrayed by Peter Falk. He settled on a 1959 Peugeot 403 convertible, believing that this aging European vehicle perfectly matched the image of the disheveled and humble detective.
This beige Peugeot 403 convertible, registered "044 APD" in California, quickly became as famous as its fictional owner. Contrary to Hollywood's usual preference for American car productions, this French model became one of the most recognizable cars on the small screen. As the
