Here is a miniature that brings together two passions firmly rooted in the automotive world: the Renault 4 and the Paris-Dakar rally. This Renault 4 Sinpar 4x4 model car recreates the vehicle that competed in the 1980 edition of the race, in a yellow, black and red livery that instantly evokes the atmosphere of the African raids of the 1980s. Produced by Vitesse at 1/43 scale, it is presented in a square-box gift set, convenient for keeping or giving.
For a collector, this piece has the advantage of standing apart from the ordinary. It combines a popular saloon, which became a true French icon, with a sporting episode little known to the general public. It naturally finds its place in a display case dedicated to rally vehicles, converted utility vehicles or models that marked their era.
The Renault 4 is one of the cars that most marked the French landscape. Launched in 1961, it was produced for more than thirty years and exceeded eight million units. Its concept is simple: a practical hatchback body, a supple suspension and rare versatility. These qualities made it a family car, a country utility vehicle and, for some, a faithful companion for every journey.
It was in this context that specialist tuners imagined four-wheel-drive versions. The Sinpar 4x4 conversion is part of this approach: it adapts the R4's mechanics and transmission to give it much better traction on tracks and rough terrain. The result keeps the lightness and simplicity of the base while gaining ground clearance and traction capacity on sand.
Entered in the 1980 Paris-Dakar rally, this version perfectly illustrates the idea of an affordable car diverted towards competition. Its presence on African tracks made it talked about among enthusiasts, even though it remains less famous today than the great machines of the period. It bears witness to an era when private crews could take on the challenge with vehicles close to those sold at dealerships.
Renault was founded in 1899 in Boulogne-Billancourt, under the impetus of the brothers Louis, Marcel and Fernand Renault. From its beginnings, the company stood out for innovative technical solutions, such as the drive shaft or the direct-drive gearbox, which helped establish the brand among the great European manufacturers. After the Second World War, the nationalisation of the company in 1945 gave it a central role in the country's industrial reconstruction.
The 1950s and 1960s saw the rise of models that became popular, such as the Dauphine and the R4. Renault then established itself as a brand capable of reaching every category of buyer, from families to craftsmen. This image of a general-purpose manufacturer close to everyday life partly explains the lasting attachment the public still shows it today.
In motor sport, the diamond-badged brand also built a solid reputation, notably in rallying, where its models achieved many successes. This dual identity, between everyday car and competition machine, is one of the threads running through its history and explains the richness of its presence in the world of miniatures.
The history of the Paris-Dakar begins with a misadventure. In 1978, driver Thierry Sabine, lost in the Ténéré desert during a rally, discovered how difficult it was to find his way without suitable equipment. From this experience was born the idea of a great race across the Sahara, between Paris and Dakar. The first raid, in 1979, laid the foundations for an event that would become one of the most famous in the world.
In this context, seeing a small front-wheel-drive saloon, known for its simplicity and robustness, racing over the dunes seemed almost provocative. Yet the Renault 4 had real assets: a decent ground clearance, a limited weight and a mechanic that was easy to maintain far from workshops. These qualities explain why private crews saw the R4 as a credible alternative to more expensive vehicles.
The entry of converted versions also illustrates an era when rallying remained close to the public. The cars partly shared the DNA of series production, and their preparation was often carried out in independent workshops, sometimes with modest means. Every vehicle that crossed the finish line thus carried as much human adventure as technical performance.
Today, these machines have become precious witnesses to a period when the Paris-Dakar fascinated all of France. Tales of breakdowns, sandstorms and improvised repairs feed collective memory and give every miniature devoted to the subject an almost documentary dimension.
In the world of 1/43 scale miniatures, the Renault 4 Sinpar 4x4 holds a special place. It combines several appreciated themes: rally vehicles, off-road models and cars that took part in legendary events. It thus stands apart from a simple series reproduction by telling a precise sporting story. Discover other references in our Renault miniatures, or explore the selection dedicated to rally cars.
To extend the adventure, off-road enthusiasts can discover our 4x4 models and vehicles entered in the Paris-Dakar rally. These pieces naturally complement the R4 Sinpar and allow you to build a true thematic display. Renault 4 fans will also appreciate our selection dedicated to the Renault 4L, to compare series versions and conversions.
This piece is primarily aimed at collectors of French vehicles, rally fans and nostalgics of the 1980s. It will also appeal to motoring history enthusiasts, drawn to models that tell the story of an era. More broadly, it will interest anyone wishing to give an elegant, documented object full of memories. To stay within the same decade, feel free to browse our 1980s miniatures, or consult the range in 1/43 format to harmonise your display.
Finally, if you are looking for other editions from the brand, the Vitesse collection offers a great variety of models, from series cars to competition prototypes. A Renault 4 Sinpar 4x4 model car will find its place among these references, for a cohesive ensemble that tells the story of the automobile on sand and on the road.

The products match the photographs. They are very well packaged. The delivery is closely monitored by the manager. I recommend this site for collectors.
The scale is the reduction ratio between the real car and the model. At 1:43 scale, for example, every centimetre of the model represents 43 centimetres of the real vehicle.
In practice, a 1:18 Ferrari model is about 25–30 cm long, while at 1:43 it measures roughly 10 cm.
Our model cars mainly come in 1:43, 1:24, 1:18 and 1:87 (HO) scale. The scale is always listed on the product page.
The smaller the second number, the bigger the model (e.g. 1:18 is larger than 1:43).
Yes, every model car ships in its protective box. The box preserves its collector value and protects your model from dust and knocks.
We pack every order with great care: bubble wrap, snug padding and polystyrene. Your model car is fully secured on its way to you.
In-stock items ship within 24–48h. Allow 2–3 business days for mainland France with Colissimo, or 4–5 days with Mondial Relay.
I can't say exactly when new stock will arrive, as it comes in a trickle. Feel free to contact me and I'll let you know as soon as it's available.
