Real model description

The Renault Frégate was launched in 1951 in the context of the post-war French reconstruction. Pierre Lefaucheux, then CEO of Renault, wanted to create a prestigious sedan capable of competing with American productions while asserting French craftsmanship. The Domaine version, marketed from 1956, met the growing demand for spacious family vehicles.

This station wagon version stood out with its rear hatch and exceptional modularity for the time. Powered by a 4-cylinder engine of 1997 cm³ developing 58 horsepower, the Frégate Domaine offered commendable performance with a top speed of 125 km/h. Its sturdy chassis and remarkable spaciousness made it a popular choice for administrations and public services.

The commercial success of the Frégate remains mixed with around 163,000 units produced across all versions, but its impact on the Renault brand image was considerable, positioning the manufacturer in the premium French segment.

History of the Renault brand

In the early 1950s, Renault went through a major transformation following the nationalization of 1945. The company, led by Pierre Lefaucheux, sought to modernize its range and win back an affluent clientele. In this context, the Frégate represented a bold bet: to create an authentically French prestige car.

The diamond brand, founded in 1898 by the Renault brothers, had already proven its capacity for innovation with models like the 4CV that democratized the automobile. The Frégate is part of this innovative line while aiming for a higher-end positioning. This period also marks Renault's commitment to Formula 1, enhancing its sporty and technical image.

The firefighter Frégate anecdote

The use of the Renault Frégate Domaine by emergency services perfectly illustrates the remarkable adaptability of this model. In Amiens, as in many French cities during the 1950s-60s, these sturdy station wagons served as liaison vehicles and for transporting light equipment for firefighters.

A delightful anecdote tells that in 1958, during the great floods of the Somme, a Frégate Domaine from the Amiens fire brigade was requisitioned to transport... the mayor and the prefect who came to assess the damages! The officials then discovered the remarkable comfort of this sedan that was on par with the official vehicles of the time. This misadventure even contributed to popularizing the Frégate among the Picardy administrations.

The distinctive red livery of this fire brigade version, with its specialized equipment and adapted interior layout, reflects the time when emergency vehicles still retained a civilian elegance. Unlike modern fire trucks, these station wagons preserved their automotive refinement while perfectly fulfilling their public service mission.

This Amiens Frégate also symbolizes the golden age of the French automotive industry, when cities like Amiens took pride in having service vehicles with impeccable finishes and reliable mechanics, true ambassadors of French expertise.
