This 1983 Renault Rodéo 5 Four Seasons Teilhol in green and brown livery represents one of the most iconic leisure vehicles of the 80s. Designed as a French alternative to Californian buggies, this 1/43 scale miniature perfectly captures the casual spirit and originality of this atypical model that marked an entire generation.
As a true automobile collector's item, this faithful reproduction reflects Renault's boldness in its quest for diversification into recreational vehicles, a time when the French industry was not afraid to innovate in unexpected segments.
Launched in 1970 and produced until 1987, the Renault Rodéo was born from the collaboration between Renault and the plastic manufacturing company ACL. Faced with the success of American buggies, Renault decided to create its own version of a leisure vehicle, using the proven technical base of the Renault 4. This 1983 “Four Seasons” version represents the culmination of the concept, featuring its ABS plastic body and remarkable off-road capabilities.
The Rodéo was distinguished by its revolutionary construction: tubular chassis, removable plastic body, and simple mechanics inherited from the R4. With its 1108 cm³ engine developing 34 horsepower, it offered unique driving sensations, particularly appreciated on beaches and country paths. Its generous ground clearance and 13-inch wheels gave it surprising off-road capabilities.
Despite a modest commercial success with around 57,000 units produced, the Rodéo made a mark for its originality and quickly became a cult object, highly sought after today by collectors of atypical automobiles.
In the early 1980s, Renault went through a remarkable period of expansion and diversification. Under the leadership of Bernard Vernier-Palliez and later Georges Besse, the public factory multiplied ambitious projects, from traditional sedans to niche vehicles like the Rodéo. This strategy reflects the company's desire to conquer all segments of the automotive market.
The year 1983, the vintage of our miniature, coincided with the launch of the Renault 25, the brand's technological showcase, and the early successes of the R5 Turbo in competition. The diamond-shaped manufacturer then navigated between cutting-edge technical innovation and unconventional creations like the Rodéo, demonstrating a limitless creativity characterizing this flamboyant decade.
This prosperous period allowed Renault to establish itself as an automotive idea laboratory, exploring both cutting-edge technologies and recreational vehicle concepts, anticipating future trends in the French automotive market.
The Renault Rodéo quickly transcended its status as a mere utility vehicle to become a true societal phenomenon. On French beaches in the 70s and 80s, it became an essential accessory for sailing clubs, campsites, and seaside resorts. Its laid-back look and practicality made it the ideal vacation companion, capable of transporting both surfboards and camping gear.
The French cinema quickly seized the Rodéo symbol. It appeared in several films of the time, particularly in summer comedies where it perfectly embodied the
