The Ford GPA remains one of the boldest creations of the American automotive industry during World War II. This faithfully reproduced 1/43 scale miniature by Atlas perfectly captures the essence of this revolutionary amphibious vehicle that marked military history.
A true collector's item for military history and automobile enthusiasts, this meticulous reproduction testifies to American ingenuity in the face of the logistical challenges of global conflict. An exceptional collectible that naturally finds its place in any collection dedicated to historical vehicles.
Developed between 1941 and 1942, the Ford GPA (Government Purpose Amphibious) was born from a collaboration between Ford Motor Company and the U.S. Army. Facing the growing needs for versatile vehicles capable of operating both on land and water, Ford adapted its famous Jeep to create this revolutionary amphibious vehicle.
Technically, the GPA takes the shortened chassis of the classic Jeep, equipped with a watertight hull and a retractable marine propeller. Its 2.2-liter 4-cylinder engine develops 60 horsepower, allowing for a speed of 80 km/h on the road and 8 km/h on water. This exceptional versatility made it a valuable tool for landing operations and reconnaissance missions.
Despite its undeniable qualities, only 12,778 units were produced between 1942 and 1943. Its high cost and technical complexity led to the cessation of its production, but its impact on the development of amphibious vehicles remains significant.
During World War II, Ford Motor Company transformed into a true arsenal of democracy. Under the leadership of Edsel Ford, the company massively converted its civilian production to meet military needs. This period marks a turning point in the history of the blue oval brand.
The Willow Run factory became the symbol of this industrial mobilization, producing B-24 bombers at a frenetic pace. Meanwhile, Ford developed a complete range of military vehicles, from Jeep GPWs to M4A3 tanks, demonstrating remarkable adaptability. This experience significantly enriched Ford's technical expertise.
The development of the GPA fits into this logic of continuous innovation. Ford applied its know-how in mass production while meeting the technical challenge of the amphibious vehicle. This period forged Ford's reputation as a manufacturer capable of addressing the most complex challenges.
Affectively nicknamed "Seep" by the GIs (contraction of "Sea" and "Jeep"), the Ford GPA quickly became a living legend on the Pacific theater of operations. Its combat debut during the Sicily landing in 1943 revealed both its exceptional qualities and its practical limitations.
The most famous anecdote involves General Patton himself, who used a GPA to cross the Strait of Messina under enemy fire. Impressed by the vehicle's capabilities, he declared: "This machine can go anywhere a soldier can go!" However, crews quickly found that while the GPA excelled on land, it remained vulnerable to significant waves.
Paradoxically, it was after the war that the GPA experienced its second youth. Many units, sold as military surplus, found a new civilian life. Farmers used it to traverse swamps, adventurers adopted it for their expeditions, and some even became tourist attractions in Florida's Everglades.
Today, collectors compete for the few surviving examples, with some fetching record prices at specialized auctions for historic military vehicles.
This reproduction of the Ford GPA occupies a prominent place in the world of military miniatures. Its historical rarity and unique character make it a particularly sought-after model among collectors passionate about military history and automotive innovation.
This miniature perfectly harmonizes with other Ford vehicles in the collection, including Jeep GPWs and other military utility vehicles from the brand. It ideally complements ensembles dedicated to military vehicles and 1940s automobiles.
Military history enthusiasts, collectors of 1/43 scale miniatures, and lovers of exceptional vehicles will find in this piece an authentic testimony to a time when automotive innovation served the great challenges of history. An acquisition that enriches any collection dedicated to Atlas creations or amphibious vehicles.

Same day shipping of the order. Delivery 2 days later at a parcel shop. Miniatures very well packaged, surrounded by bubble wrap and immersed in polystyrene chips, all in a very sturdy box. Miniatures that correspond exactly to the photographs on the site. And, moreover, a handwritten note slipped into the package. I will reorder.
