The Ford M20 Military Vehicle in History

The Ford M20 Armored Utility Vehicle was developed in 1943 to meet the specific needs of the U.S. Army for a reconnaissance and command vehicle. Based on the chassis of the M8 Greyhound, this armored vehicle was distinguished by its open turret equipped with a .50 caliber machine gun, providing substantial firepower for its class.

With 19 mm of armor and a Hercules JXD engine producing 110 horsepower, the M20 could reach 89 km/h on the road, making it one of the fastest military vehicles of its time. Its six-wheel drive design granted it excellent mobility on all terrains, an essential characteristic for reconnaissance missions.

Produced in approximately 3,700 units, the M20 achieved remarkable operational success on both European and Pacific theaters, primarily serving in U.S. armored cavalry units until the end of the war.

Ford and the American War Effort

During World War II, Ford Motor Company radically transformed its production lines to support the Allied war effort. The Dearborn company became one of the leading suppliers of military equipment, producing not only ground vehicles but also B-24 bombers in its massive Willow Run complex.

Ford's adaptability allowed it to massively produce military vehicles while maintaining high quality standards. The M20, like other military vehicles from Ford during this period, benefited from the industrial expertise accumulated by the brand since its founding in 1903, particularly in mass production and process optimization.

A Versatility That Made Its Legend

The Ford M20 quickly earned the nickname "Command Car" among American crews, not only for its official role but for its remarkable ability to adapt to unforeseen missions. Soldiers discovered that its open turret, originally designed for reconnaissance, easily transformed into a mobile command post during complex operations.

A famous anecdote recounts that in Normandy, several M20s were used as express liaison vehicles between the different Allied beachheads. Their exceptional speed allowed for the transmission of urgent orders faster than the radio systems of the era, often disrupted by weather conditions or enemy interference.

The vehicle also left a mark with its legendary robustness. Numerous veteran testimonies speak of M20s that continued to function despite direct impacts from shell fragments, allowing them to evacuate dangerous areas and save lives. This reputation for reliability contributed to the legend of the M20 in American military history.

After the war, some M20s were converted into civilian demining vehicles, their armor and mobility proving perfect for securing liberated areas. This second career attests to the quality of design of this exceptional vehicle.

Same day shipping of the order. Delivery 2 days later at a parcel shop. Miniatures very well packaged, surrounded by bubble wrap and immersed in polystyrene chips, all in a very sturdy box. Miniatures that correspond exactly to the photographs on the site. And, moreover, a handwritten note slipped into the package. I will reorder.
